Legalize it, baby

Though I run the risk of once again betraying my geographic bias, I'm extremely excited about a potential ballot issue in the next round of elections in California.

Near and dear to many college students hearts, signatures are being collected to put the legalization of marijuana on the ballot in 2010.

Being a libertarian sort here, I'm absolutely in favor. There are a million and one reasons why marijuana should be legal, but you don't come here to hear me rehash that argument.

With any luck, this will be on the ballot and pass by a big fat margin, and maybe we can start winding down this drug war once and for all.

Books: keep or sell?

Its a question we've all asked ourselves. At first, when I was a freshmen I sold all my books back, because back then it was all about the paper. Now, while I'm still all about collecting the gouda, my stance on book selling has changed significantly. Knowing it at first but slowly coming to terms with it later, the GW bookstore is a fucking scam operation. They sell you books at inflated prices and then "buy" them back from you (and most of the time they don't even do that) at extremely deflated values, only to resell them next semester for more than they bought them back for and at about 70% of their original price. In other words, they are making a killing off these books. Now, there are of course the other vendors that tend to pop up on H st around this time of year, but they are looking to rip you off as much as the bookstore.

Leaving us all with the option that many before me have advocated : keep your books. Build a library and impress the shit out of your friends and visitors by how smart you seem. Because of course it is scientifically proven that the more books you have the smarter people think you are. At the very least, you will eventually be assigned the same book in other classes (especially with our Cold War obsessed PoliSci,History and IAFF departments) meaning that you really need to buy Strategies of Containment by Gaddis and Global Cold War by Westad just once your freshmen year, using at least once a semester for the rest of your time at GW, like I have.

ED more selective

The Hatchet highlighted early decision becoming more selective int he coming year.

This is interesting for me, since I applied and was accepted early decision. I remember I was looking through a college book, I don't remember if it was US News or a competitor, and browsing through the admissions rates for a bunch of schools I was applying to.

GW was pretty standard, hanging around 30% total admissions. But then I looked over at the early decision numbers; much much higher. Closer to 60%, from what I recall.

That's when I decided to apply to GW. It hadn't been my first choice at that point, but it was certainly near the top, and I liked it enough that I didn't want to turn down a chance to drastically increase my chances of getting into a school that I had listed as a "maybe" (I had a pretty low GPA, folks, though I was above GW's SAT range).

Early decision is one of the big reasons I'm at GW right now. I understand the logic behind decreasing the admissions rate from early decision, but I wanted to note the change, at least.

What about you, anonymous commenters? Any of you apply ED? Was it because of the drastically larger acceptance rate?

Vote NO today

VOTE NO HERE: http://my.gwu.edu/mod/elections/

Today's the day, the student referendum on the new constitution. The Patriot doesn't usually speak with one voice, but today we do: Vote NO.

Not to toot my own horn, but I did a brief write up on the main issues with the new constitution.

WRGW's just came out with an editorial urging you to vote NO as well.

The Hatchet agrees as well, urging students to VOTE NO

But remember to vote today as soon as the polls open, and VOTE NO NO NO.
