Should we get today off?

Today is Columbus Day. It is the day we as Americans, or even residents of the Western Hemisphere, commemorate the discovery of the new world by Cristobal Columbus. Recently, however, all the PC-whores have been condemning the day as a celebration of genocide and Evil White-Imperialism. I, of course, disagree with those who wish to talk down this extremely important day. Consider this: had Columbus not sailed the ocean blue (in 1492), where would be today? Some will argue that someone else would have discovered the Americas, and that may be true, but it is impossible to actually determine such.

For better or worse, Columbus's discovery is a pretty big reason why we are all here today. And if you don't like it, then consider what condition you would be in right now had your ancestors not heard of that brand new land called America...er...New Spain...er...Hispanola...whatever, you know what I mean.

So what does everyone else think? Is today a day that needs to be celebrated with a day off? Or was Columbus just another one of those racist, genocidal maniacs that we need to condemn for what they did to the New World?

...Or we could follow the example of my home state of South Dakota and change the name of the holiday to "Native American Day." (This may be the most liberal thing South Dakota has ever done.)

To be fair, GW gives us very few days off in general so that we can have a week of "reading days" before finals, and still have a long enough winter break.

I don't think the issue here is that the day isn't important or whatever. You don't get flag day off; is that because stupid PC liberals hate the flag (a la Obama not wearing a flag pin)? No. We don't get International Day of Peace off! Is it because liberals hate peace? It's because at some point you actually have to go to class and get work done. Columbus day is evidently where we draw the line.

If it's a federal holiday, I feel like everyone should have it off.

Failing that, GW would do well to give us a day off at some point this fall. The stretch from Labor Day to Thanksgiving is brutal, but that's just me complaining...

Columbus day shouldn't be a holiday because America wasn't discovered by Columbus. It wasn't really "discovered" at all. Native Americans came over here on the land bridge 40,000 - 60,000 thousand years ago and were here long before Europeans. The first person to set foot on what would become US soil was actually Juan Ponce DeLeon in 1519.

Your whole PC argument is as dumb as you are. You just want another day off from school, cry me a river you idiot

Word to above, minus the whole HUNTER YOU SUCK GOSH-ness that only anonymity can produce.

If I wished to honor mass murderers I'd do so privately. I'm working on a kids book to set the record straight entitled "In 1492, Columbus was to Indians what Hitler was to Jews."I have a great illustrator on board.

The Patriot accepts anonymous comments [unlike the draconian editors at the Hatchet]. However, we strongly prefer that you USE A NAME. Mostly it's because we don't take anonymous comments seriously, but it's also because we hate bullshit. Have a nice day.
